Join us for a special presentation highlighting "Our History. Our Voice. The Mexican American History Project of Greeley," a powerful new book that captures the lived experiences, cultural contributions, and enduring spirit of Greeley’s Mexican American community. Mexican American History Project Greeley founder and coordinator Emma Pena-McCleave and project co-coordinator and author Maria Sanchez, PhD will present about the book that brings personal stories and community history to life. They will also discuss their plans to open a new exhibit at the Greeley History Museum in October 2025.The Mexican American History Project Greeley was established to tell the story of Mexican American intellectual, economic, and cultural impacts for the benefit of the Greeley community at large. About the Presenters:
Emma Peña-McCleave, Project Coordinator
Emma Peña-McCleave's lifelong commitment to community began with the Colorado Migrant Council. Her studies in Education, Sociology, Chicano Studies, Spanish, and Business Administration supports her dedication to serving the Latino Community. Her motto is: “If you are not at the decision-making table, you’re just screaming at the door.” She is from Ovid, CO, and currently lives in Greeley, CO with her husband Robert McCleave. She is the Founder and Coordinator of the Mexican American History Project of Greeley (2022-2025) and is currently the President of the Rodarte Community Center, Greeley, and Vice President of the Greeley History Museum. She is a past Board member of the Hispanic Women of Weld County. Emma also served two terms as President of the CU Latino Alumni of CU at Boulder. For her service and commitment to the community she was inducted into the Colorado Hispanic Hall of Fame in 2000. She earned a Bachelor's degree and double majored in Spanish and Sociology from CU Boulder, a Degree in Business Administration from Regis University, Master’s work in Education from CSU and attended the University of Veracruz, Jalapa Veracruz, Mexico, for advanced Spanish coursework.
Dr. Maria Sanchez, Project Co-Coordinator and Narrative Writer
Dr. Maria Sanchez is a retired Registered Nurse with 45 plus years of experience. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from UNC, as well as a Doctorate Degree in Education and Human Resource Studies from CSU. She has been actively involved in the community, having served as a board member for the Greeley Chamber of Commerce, Room at the Inn, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, City of Greeley Historic Preservation Commission, Island Grove Detox Center, Weld County Food Bank, and the Saint Peter’s Catholic Church Restoration Project.
