About "The Hello Girls" Documentary
In 1918, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France as telephone operators to help win the Great War. They swore Army oaths, wore uniforms, held rank, and were subject to military justice. By war's end, they had connected over 26 million calls and were recognized by General John J. Pershing for their service. When they returned home, the U.S. government told them they were never soldiers. For 60 years, they fought their own government for recognition. In 1977, with the help of Sen. Barry Goldwater and Congresswoman Lindy Boggs, they won. Unfortunately, only a handful were still alive.
MARCH IS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
March, National Women’s History Month, is just around the corner. For 31 days, the nation will be purposefully celebrating the contributions and accomplishments of women. The Military Women’s Memorial (MWM) is delighted to join the celebration and to have the opportunity to reinforce what we do every day – tell the stories of America’s military women – highlighting their contributions, accomplishments and sacrifice in service to America. The legacy of women’s service in and with the military is long and storied, covering the entire history of the nation. While sometimes disregarded, discredited and their service fraught with challenge, women persevered and continued to step up – they just wanted to serve. Those trailblazers from across the decades made it possible for women today to serve in America’s Armed Forces at every level and in every job.
At MWM for Women’s History Month 2025, we are encouraging everyone to “March With Me” (MWM) – an obvious play on the Memorial’s abbreviation (MWM), as well as on the word “March” ― the month and the activity in which every military woman, past and present, has participated. We’re asking you – our members and supporters – to build and strengthen a nationwide community around America’s military women by “marching” with MWM throughout the month by collecting and telling women’s stories of service to the nation. Our goal is to celebrate all military women’s service and tell their stories, giving them the recognition they deserve.
Guests are invited to tour the Memorial, view seldom seem artifacts from the MWM Collection (archive), watch films about women in the military, and register their stories of military service.

The Military Women's Memorial
Situated at the ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, the Military Women’s Memorial is the only major national memorial and education center dedicated to preserving and honoring the history of all servicewomen – past and present. More than 3 million women have served in the military since the American Revolution, yet the stories of these courageous patriots are largely untold. For more than 25 years, the mission of the Memorial has been to honor and tell the stories of service of all women who have served our nation. By ensuring these stories of honor, duty, and sacrifice live on in perpetuity, future generations of girls and women are able to see clear pathways and leadership examples through military service. The Memorial educates and inspires through innovative and interactive exhibitions, our world-class collections, and engaging programs and events for all generations.
