"The Color Purple" - A Daryl Stewart Production

Few stories have achieved the cultural significance and enduring power of Alice Walker's The Color Purple. Since 2018, DSP founder Daryl Stewart has honored Black History Month by producing transformative theater. The Color Purple at the new Union Arts Center in Union, New Jersey in collaboration with Township of Union.

Beloved worldwide, The Color Purple follows Celie Harris on her harrowing journey from trauma to triumph. At fourteen, pregnant with her second child, Celie endures unspeakable cruelty from male family members. Her babies are taken. She's married off to a brutal husband. Her sister disappears, leaving Celie devastatingly alone, her spirit shattered. But step by step—guided by two courageous Black women—Celie rises. She claims her independence, her voice, and her life. This musical adaptation pulses with soul, gospel, jazz, and blues, combining soaring vocals with unflinching dialogue and masterful storytelling. It's a triumphant celebration of fundamental truths: Black is beautiful. Women are powerful. Love is love.
