"Sturgeon Moon" Full Moon Paddle at Miami Yacht Club 27 August 2026
About this Event
VOA in collaboration with Virginia Key Outdoor Center is conducting an evening paddle (kayak or SUP) on August 27th, from 6-9 PM during the Full Sturgeon Moon.
August's full Moon, called the Sturgeon Moon, is named after the giant freshwater fish that historically thrived in North America's lakes during late summer. This year's moon is exceptionally rare and spectacular because it coincides with a deep partial lunar eclipse, where nearly 96% of the moon will slide into Earth's shadow, turning the night sky into a breathtaking celestial show! Look for the brilliantly bright Moon as it rises above the horizon that evening.
Discover why Miami is called the Magic City! Enjoy a spectacular night under the stars. City lights glimmer as do the stars above the Miami Skyline and Port of Miami. Wrap up your evening enjoying the shimmering night sky in the sheltered bay.
TIME & PLACE: Meet at Miami Yacht Club on Watson Island (next to Parrot Jungle) at 6:00 PM in order for check in. We will return in the dark, lights are required for this paddle. If you reserved through VOA, lights are included in the reservations.
DIFFICULTY:This paddle is suitable for beginners. The bay has sheltered waters regardless of winds.
DESTINATION:Final destination and route are subject to weather. We will circumnavigate Star Island. It will be dark so please, stay together.
AFTER PADDLE: VOA will provide water for participants but we encourage you to bring your own refillable water bottle. VOA will also provide light refreshments and non alcoholic beverages. Please plan to stay and gaze at the moon and wish our founder, Branson Rector, farewell. You are welcome to stay later and order from the MYC Restaurant menu at your own expense.
