In memory of Stavros Kyriakides: Island Bay artist and identity.
Pay tribute to Stavros through creating your own rock sculpture on the beach alongside others who’ve come to remember him.
The spot chosen is opposite 140 The Esplanade, approx 250m south of the Island Bay Bait Shed.
Walk towards Houghton Bay, where on the coast there are plenty of stones, boulders and surprises for avid rock stackers. Look out for others who have come to shape their tribute to Stavros, and connect over the emerging rock sculptures.
Stavros passed away suddenly at the end of 2024. Locals shared their connection and their stories online, along with their admiration for his unique sculptures. But, together, we haven’t been able to acknowledge the loss of this gentleman and his arresting rock and driftwood art that seemed to mysteriously appear along the coast.

The combined churches of Island Bay have shaped this idea, though there is no formality to the event, and no leader - purely the presence of people, at this place and time, who wish to make a tribute to a remarkable local man.
Head past the “Welcome to Island Bay” sign on the beach side of the road, past the start of the Snorkel Trail, and head to the rocks… and build your tribute to Stavros.
