Charleston Crafts Gallery, an artist-owned cooperative in the heart of downtown Charleston, is pleased to present its June exhibition, Squaring the Circle, which opens with a public reception on Friday, June 5, from 5pm to 8pm.Borrowing its title from the impossible geometric problem, Squaring the Circle explores the idea of overcoming limitations and pushing the boundaries of fine craft. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will encounter work that balances precision with experimentation, while subtle references to geometry and pattern emerge across a range of mediums.
Featuring original work by the gallery’s member artists, the exhibition showcases contemporary fine craft that challenges expectations through material, process, and form.
Featured artists include:
• Fairoozan — a paper artist and illustrator who transforms paper quilling into contemporary artworks filled with color, movement, and pattern. Combining her background in painting with meticulously layered paper forms, she creates pieces that feel both graphic and sculptural.
• Nancy Warren — a fiber artist creating handwoven scarves, jewelry, and textile work that explores texture, color, and structure through both traditional and experimental techniques.
• Amanda Mazza — a soap-maker creating all-natural handmade soaps inspired by the textures, colors, and scents of the natural world. She approaches soap-making as both science and art, transforming everyday rituals into thoughtful experiences.
• Jennifer Brower — a jeweler creating wire-woven pieces inspired by the flowing lines of Art Nouveau and the geometry of Art Deco design, emphasizing movement and balance.
• Susan Livingston — a mixed-media fiber artist whose work incorporates hand-dyed fabrics, stitching, and found objects gathered from nature. Using needle and thread as mark-making tools, she creates meditative textile works rooted in organic forms and natural dyes.
• Selma Andrews — a jewelry and mixed-media artist working in polymer clay using the millefiori technique. Through layered canes of color and pattern, she creates detailed wearable pieces that blend craftsmanship with playful design.
The opening reception takes place during the Charleston Gallery Association’s ArtWalk, a monthly evening celebrating the visual arts in downtown Charleston. Visitors are encouraged to include Charleston Crafts Gallery as part of their ArtWalk experience while exploring the many galleries and creative spaces that downtown Charleston offers.
