About the book
After six years of public work and conversation, including a podcast launched in2020,K.A. Gilmore releases Nobody Told Me I Am Black: Setting the Stage, the first book in a three part series that confronts racism directly and demands honesty. Many of the stories in Book One - Setting the Stage take place in Spokane, making this homecoming especially meaningful as the book begins its public journey.
What began as real time dialogue about race, responsibility, and everyday silence has evolved into a structured examination of how racism operates through comfort, proximity, and inaction. This work does not chase headlines or react to trends. It examines racism as a system sustained not only by overt acts, but by the decisions people make in ordinary moments.
Written in a direct, conversational voice, the book weaves story and data without separating the two. It challenges readers to consider where they stand, what they tolerate, and what participation actually requires. Systems do not change on their own. People do. At some point, the face of change becomes yours.
About the author
Karen Loomis, writing as K.A. Gilmore, is the author of Nobody Told Me I Am Black, a three book series. Her work examines racial identity, inherited bias, economic systems, and the social cost of silence. Karen grew up in Spokane and spent 29 of her years in the Inland Empire.
With a background in marketing and communication strategy, she brings lived experience and analytical rigor to conversations many avoid but few can sustain. Her approach is direct, steady, and grounded in clarity rather than accusation.
She created and co-hosted a six episode podcast series distributed through Phoenix Business Radio X. The series generated more than 344,000 listens during its initial broadcast run. An independent version of the platform will relaunch later this year.
Karen has presented at DigiMarCon, Digital Summit, Phoenix Design Conference, and a local Phoenix chapter conference of Mensa.
She is also a professor of Advertising & Design at Grand Canyon University.
