"Meet the Artist" with Chris Brooks

On Thursday, February 19, we welcome Chris Brooks to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Brooks will be talking about his decade-long journey to discover a 137 year old family printing and publishing business, one he knew little about because of the death of his father when he was young. The culmination of which was a book of finely crafted large format photographs and letterpress printing, published by that same family business, relaunched some 40 years after its closure. He will have copies of his book, The Brooks Press of Wirksworth, available for sale during the evening. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube page at 6pm.

Join us on select Thursday evenings at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served.

Chris Brooks is a British-born photographer (b’77) whose work examines the complicated nature of belonging and family, nationhood, identity, and the power of place. In his work, Brooks utilizes a combination of deadpan humor and ‘storm in a teacup’ tragedy to produce an often quiet, observational set of images, a mode inherited from growing up in a poor working-class area of Thatcher’s Britain.

After being ‘seduced’ by editorial photography in the early 2000s in London, Brooks began to work on commissions for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as clients including Chanel, Michael Kors, and Louis Vuitton, becoming known for his early adoption of environment in still-life photography, as well as his humorous way of combining luxury objects with everyday scenarios.
