About this Event

Town Hall Talk

Presented by The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum and sponsored by the GOLS Foundation

Tuesday, March 17th

In the South Florida of the 1920s, Prohibition is a joke. There’s an open coastline just a few hours’ boat ride from the British docks in the Bahamas, and wealthy society swells, gangsters and tourists will pay handsomely for a drink. The suppliers become folk heroes and the lawman the villain. Police detective Nate Moran must solve a M**der in a secret room of a Palm Beach hotel where the rich and entitled can drink: Hypocrite’s Row.

Author and retired Palm Beach Post reporter Eliot Kleinberg’s novel “Hypocrite’s Row,” the first book of the “Adventures of Nate Moran” novels, is all about Prohibition. Hear about the sordid history, and absolute failure of the "noble experiment" in Palm Beach County and Florida.

Florida native Eliot Kleinberg, creator of the "Adventures of Nate Moran" novels, the Civil War historical novel Peace River, and the original "Weird Florida" books, spent nearly a half-century reporting on local news and writing about Florida and Florida history. He produced two history columns and wrote fourteen books -- and co-wrote or contributed to several more -- all of them about Florida. Son of longtime journalist Howard Kleinberg, he lectures regularly on Florida topics and runs a blog on better writing called "Something Went Horribly Wrong."
