TLC Presents: "Have You Had Your Breakfast Yet?"Cultural Encounters of an American Teacher in South China, with Priscilla Young
For eight years Priscilla Young taught business communication and academic writing at the internationalized Peking University Business School in Shenzhen. From her first day on the job in 2012 she was greeted kindly by older Chinese with the words "Have you had your breakfast yet?" This puzzling greeting was the first of many cultural encounters that she would be decoding over the years as she became acclimated to her surroundings in China. In a 40 minute slide presentation with photos taken during her travels in China and Hong Kong, Priscilla will talk about these encounters and share some of the inevitable "agony and ecstasy" that comes with trying to navigate daily life in culturally unfamiliar territory.
A new member of Channing this year, Priscilla holds a master’s degree in communication studies from the University of Rhode Island and currently teaches part-time for the department. Her presentation will take place on January 18 after Sunday service, 11:30 in the Parish Hall, Q&A to follow. Light refreshments will be served. $5 cash or check donation suggested
