"Gesellshaft mit beschränkter Hoffnung" by Karsten Krampitz

"Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Hoffnung" erzählt die unglaubliche Geschichte einer gelebten Utopie mitten in der DDR – der »Krüppelkommune« von Hartroda. Ende der 70er Jahre in Arnstadt beschließen vier Freunde in einem Heim für behinderte Jugendliche: Wir brechen aus. Von Rente und Pflegegeld finanzieren sie sich Pfleger, ein Haus bekommen sie von der Kirche – das alte Pfarrhaus in Hartroda.

So entsteht eine Gemeinschaft der Gleichen, in der alles geteilt wird – Geld und Bücher, Platten und Bier, aber auch alle Gebrechen. Eine Gemeinschaft der Aussortierten, die sich mit Witz und Chuzpe das Undenkbare erkämpft: ein selbstbestimmtes Leben, vielleicht sogar Freiheit. Unter dem Schirm der Kirche scheint sie vom DDR-Apparat in Ruhe gelassen zu werden – bis mit dem Zusammenbruch der DDR deutlich wird, dass auch die Mauer Teil dessen war, was diese Gemeinschaft zusammengehalten hat.

[EN] As part of the series “Meetings Without Translation”, a book presentation by Carsten Krampitz will take place. The author will present his novel “Society with Limited Hope”. Svetlana Müller will moderate the discussion. The event will be held in German.

"Society with Limited Hope" tells the incredible story of a lived utopia in the heart of the GDR – the so-called “Cripple Commune” of Hartroda. In the late 1970s in Arnstadt, four friends living in a residential home for young people with disabilities made a decision: we broke out. Using disability pensions and care allowances, they organize personal assistants; the church provides them with a house, the old rectory in Hartroda.

What emerges is a community of equals where everything is shared – money and books, records and beer, but also illness and vulnerability. A community of those pushed aside, who with wit and audacity fight for the unthinkable: a self-determined life, perhaps even freedom. Sheltered by the church, they seemed left alone by the GDR authorities – until the collapse of the GDR revealed that the Wall itself also held this community together.
