About this Event
Join us in Raleigh for an event with Dr. Michael C. Munger.
Tariffs are often misunderstood, leading to several common misconceptions. They are taxes on imported goods paid by domestic importers, not foreign exporters, and frequently result in higher costs for consumers. While intended to protect domestic jobs, tariffs can trigger retaliatory actions from other countries, harming export-driven industries and potentially leading to job losses. They have a limited effect on reducing trade deficits, which are shaped more by broader economic factors such as savings and investment patterns. Additionally, tariffs contribute minimally to government revenue in modern economies compared to other forms of taxation. Rather than fostering long-term economic growth, tariffs can stifle competitiveness and innovation by shielding domestic industries from global market forces, ultimately limiting their ability to adapt and thrive.
