What is the value of empathy in medical care, and how can we foster this important clinical skill? This talk explores the ways in which medical educators have effectively curbed the empathy decline through health professions training. One very effective method, Medical Improv, is explored in depth.
Amy B. Zelenski, PhD, is an Associate Professor and the Director of Education Innovation and Scholarship for the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine and Public Health at UW- Madison. She designs curriculum and teaches improv, communication, empathy, teamwork, and self-awareness skills to medical professionals. Her research focuses on teaching physicians how to engage in empathic behaviors with their patients, learners, and interprofessional colleagues and how building skill in empathic behavior can increase the quality of patient care and decrease healthcare provider burnout and personal distress.
