Join us for the opening reception on February 19 from 6-8 pm at our 3rd Thursday on 3rd Avenue Gallery Night! Ryan will be on hand to discuss his work.Ryan Kniss is a wildlife artist and illustrator based in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Pennsylvania Western University, Edinboro, where he refined the technical skills necessary to translate his lifelong passion for the natural world into professional-grade illustration.
Artistic Philosophy and Inspiration
Kniss’s work is deeply rooted in the intersection of art and conservation. His fascination with wildlife began in childhood, fueled by the intricate details of animal books and the architecture of the natural world. This interest was further catalyzed by his father’s postage stamp collection; observing the precision and narrative power of those small-scale masterpieces inspired Kniss to pursue the challenging field of stamp art.
For Kniss, the process of creating is an act of research and devotion. He meticulously studies state and federal conservation efforts, gamebird species, and environmental habitats to ensure his depictions are both anatomically accurate and emotionally resonant. He views his art as a vehicle for environmental advocacy, aiming to highlight the vital importance of protecting wildlife habitats.
Notable Achievements and Recognition
A dedicated competitor in the prestigious federal and state duck stamp circuits, Kniss has quickly established himself as a rising talent in the field. His recent accolades include:
