About this Event

Dignity In Rest | First Look Trailer | Documentary in Production

Where we rest matters.

Founded in 1886 by formerly enslaved Black Americans and other Black leaders in response to the indignities of segregation, South-View Cemetery became sacred ground for generations of African Americans in Atlanta. Within its grounds rests an extraordinary history of Black Atlanta. Formerly enslaved people, Reconstruction leaders, entrepreneurs, physicians, nurses, educators, artists, athletes, civil rights activists and other trailblazers tell a larger story of the people who helped build Black Atlanta.

Filmmaker, Blacktivist and Educator Cheryle Renee Moses takes audiences on a journey through Black Atlanta history while confronting an intensely personal question of her own: Where will I rest?

Her family has history at Westview Cemetery. South-View holds another powerful connection, including the resting places of three women she called her godmothers. As Cheryle explores both history and family, a decision about her own final resting place begins to take on a much deeper meaning.

Dignity In Rest explores Atlanta Black history, memory, belonging, self-determination and the significance of choosing where our stories ultimately rest.

This special First Look Trailer offers audiences an early glimpse of the documentary currently in production. Coming December 2026.

Dignity In Rest screens as one of eight shorts opening the 25th Urban Mediamakers Film Festival including:

  • The Injustice of Justice
  • 37 Dollars
  • The B-Side

  • Des Racines Nées (Birthed Uproots)
