Counted Out, a documentary by Vicki Abeles, is a film screening that explores how math literacy, or the lack of it, shapes some of the most pressing challenges facing society today, from economic inequality and civic participation to justice and democratic decision making. The film presents mathematics as both a civil right and a powerful gatekeeper, featuring stories of individuals affected by math trauma, inequitable education systems, and algorithm-driven decision-making. Highlighting voices such as Bob Moses and the Algebra Project, the documentary points out why broad access to math understanding is essential for informed citizenship and a healthy democracy. After the screening, a facilitated discussion will invite attendees to reflect on the film’s themes, ask questions, and share personal experiences related to math learning, confidence, and opportunity. The conversation will also consider how math education, policy, and public awareness can expand opportunity and strengthen democratic life at the local, state, and national levels.
This event is hosted by the Center for Politics and the People and co-sponsored by the Mathematical and Computing Sciences Department. The screening will take place in Bear Auditorium within the Franzen Center for the Arts.
