Columbia Air Center was the nation’s first licensed Black-owned and operated airport. Located 25 miles southeast of DC in Croom, Prince George’s County, Maryland, it operated from 1940-1962. It was a shining example of Black excellence, including members such a famed jazz big band leader Jimmie Lunceford, and connections to the Tuskegee Airmen.
College Park Aviation Museum has been developing this project since 2021, in collaboration with descendant communities. The exhibit is scheduled to open Fall of 2025.
