"Change the Subject" by Claire Hopple (w/ Jake Maynard)
About this Event
We are excited to host prolific writer and Murraysville native Claire Hopple at White Whale to celebrate the publication of her new satirical novel, Change the Subject. Claire will be joined in conversation by local author and organizer of the reading series, Sex and Death Book Club, Jake Maynard.
Change the Subject is a provocative, absurd work of satire about wealth inequality and gig work in America. Monica, a floundering gig-economy washout, takes a risk working in a brand-new industry called proxying. Proxies wear hats with cameras and screens on them, and are paid to represent rich people at their family functions. A chance encounter at a proxying gig results in Monica appearing on the biggest trivia game show of all time, an event which should provide her with economic security but instead leads to entanglements with the mafia and ultimately to the witness protection program.
JAKE MAYNARD is the author of the novel SLIME LINE and the forthcoming story collection HICKSTERS. He works as a landscaper in Pittsburgh.
CLAIRE HOPPLE is the author of seven books. Her stories have appeared in Southwest Review, Wigleaf, Forever Mag, Little Engines, Cleveland Review of Books, and others. She is a fiction editor at XRAY. More at clairehopple.com.
