About this Event

Are you "Built for NYC"? What if you could use code to help your local community? Join The New York Public Library and partner organization Major League Hacking for a special, free weekend-long hackathon at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL).

Open to New Yorkers of all coding abilities, this free program offers two days of learning, coding, networking, and collaboration in the heart of NYC’s burgeoning tech scene. Using generative AI and "vibe coding," your mission is to develop a web app, assisted by AI, that meets a challenge that NYC is facing, for example, mapping food deserts, organizing neighborhood park utilization, or improving local access to city resources. Open-source data (e.g., NYC Open Data) can be used.

New to “vibe coding” and generative AI? No worries! The first day of the hackathon will include an opportunity to learn more about machine learning and AI before ideating, prototyping, and pitching apps focused on using these emerging technologies to help address challenges unique to our great city. While the workshops on Day 1 will focus on how to use Google AI Studio and GitHub Copilot, any AI tool that participants have access to may be used for the challenge.
