On Saturday, December 7, 2024 the "Blues By Budweiser" concert series will feature "Fonky Donkey”. The event will be held at RJ's Grill & Bar located at 128 S. Main in downtown Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Doors will open at 7 PM, music will begin at 8 PM. Port City Blues Society members are admitted free, only $5 cover for others. The concert series is being sponsored by M.K. Distributors.
Fonky Donkey will feature the guitar playing of Gil Franklin, slide resonator guitar and blues harp playing of Ben Swamp Donkey Brenner, guitar of Eric Struthers, the sax of Kevin Lewis, piano and organ playing of Curtis “JJ” Adams, the rhythm section of Lance “Bug Tussle Slim” Womack (drums) and Lynn Fitzgerald (bass).
The band is known for its original blues, roots, and Americana music fueled by the songwriting talents of Brenner and Franklin.
Fonky Donkey was formed in Little Rock, Arkansas in the spring of 2019. The band has performed at the Sonny Boy Blues Society’s Blues Challenge, the King Biscuit Blues Festival, the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, the Cotton Belt Festival, the Delta Roots and Heritage Festival, the Riverfront Blues Festival in Fort Smith and the Lum & Abner Music & Arts Festival in Mena. The band has also competed in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
Please join Fonky Donkey at RJ’s Bar and Grill in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, at 7 PM on December 7, 2024, for a special show commemorating the release of the original song, “Down In The Bluff.” An original, limited edition, commemorative poster by award-winning Arkansas artist Robert Bean will be available for purchase.
“Down In The Bluff” is the latest single from the award-winning Arkansas band Fonky Donkey. Written by Ben “Swamp Donkey” Brenner and Gil Franklin, this original song celebrates the culture and musical heritage of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and the dedication of the Port City Blues Society to keeping that music alive.
The single featuring ace guitar work from Jerry McCoy, "Down In The Bluff" will take you on a journey starting at RJ’s Bar and Grill, where the Port City Blues Society hosts their weekly blues jam, down Main Street and past the legacies of blues greats Elmore James and Bobby Rush, into the backrooms, alleys, and speakeasies for some dice throwin’ and sax blowin’, back into the Arkansas night where the Cotton Belt is steady rollin’ through hallowed ground, before ending with a chorus not soon forgotten.
“Down In The Bluff” will be released on December 7. 2024, and will be included on the forthcoming Fonky Donkey record, “The Snake & The Apple.”
