Ancestors Among Us: A Decolonial Philadelphia Ghost Walking Tour
About this Event
Ancestors Among Us: A Philadelphia Ghost Walking Tour is a 2-hour seasonal tour that kicks off at the fountain in Congo Square (Washington Square), reframes, explores, and celebrates the diverse ancestral spirits who once lived in the neighborhood...and still haunt the area, hosted by Afro-Indigenous public historian & cultural worker Morgan Lloyd.
In this tour, guests will learn about:
Black and American-Indigenous gravesites; cemeteries hidden in plain sight; 19th-century cultural burial traditions; “alternative” spiritualities of Underground Railroad conductors. And learn about some of the incredible multicultural ancestors who contributed to Philadelphia’s incredible history. We will explore one of the neighborhoods they thrived in pre-colonization and into the early years of the United States.
Additional note:
Please wear comfortable shoes; we will occasionally walk on uneven sidewalks, cobblestone, and unpaved paths. You are responsible for your own safety. Taking part in the tour means you are participating at your own risk. You are also responsible for looking after your own belongings.
A few parking garages are available surrounding the starting place; street parking is limited by the park.
