Analog Week | Cyanotype Workshop with The Forest Blues
About this Event
Join us for an evening of cyanotype printing!
Explore the analog technique of cyanotype printing with hands-on guidance from cyanotype artist Rae Hood, founder of The Forest Blues. Cyanotype is a photography process using the sun’s UV light to produce unique images. Since the nineteenth century, artists have used light-sensitive chemicals to create blue-toned prints using UV light and film. Learn alongside fellow creatives as you discover the magic revealed in your very own cyanotype prints.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own found materials to experiment with. Translucent and organic materials tend to work great, as well as items with interesting negative space (lace, nets, mesh, etc).
Want to print a photo instead? Turn one of your own images, in the form of a digital file, into a cyanotype print at no extra cost. Just submit up to two desired photos by Sunday, July 12, and we'll prepare a negative for you on transparency film.
With the UV lights, exposures take about 7 minutes so you can expect to walk away with between 3-5 prints over the course of the evening. The necessary chemistry and 5x7 paper is included. Just bring a few of your own found materials and creativity!
MEET THE INSTUCTOR: RAE HOOD
My name is Rae Hood, founder of The Forest Blues. I’m a Seattle-based artist, portrait photographer, and plant lover. The Forest Blues fuses my passions for photography and printmaking with my love for the historic process of cyanotype. Each piece I make is a community invitation. Let’s explore nature more deeply and more playfully. Let’s do it together.
I started The Forest Blues as a small effort to help heal our severed connection to the natural world around us. My patrons become my community collaborators, telling me anecdotes about the plants, trees, and flowers that have influenced their lives. Every plant has a story. When we listen to our landscapes, our added ecological awareness brings with it an increased political consciousness. We are inspired to preserve, proliferate, and cherish what we can. Every piece of my art represents a new growth, a new way to fall more in love with the land we share. We can think more critically about environmental justice and sustainability.
