Ana Roxanne makes music for states that resist easy definition. Across voice, piano and electronics, the Bay Area-born, New York-based composer traces grief, intimacy and transformation with an extraordinary sensitivity to space.
Her wider breakthrough arrived with ~~~, a collection whose unusually quiet power made it one of 2019’s most acclaimed ambient releases. Originally self-released in 2015 and circulated among friends, the record found a larger audience when Leaving Records reissued it four years later. Its six pieces introduced Roxanne’s remarkably assured musical language: devotional vocals, suspended electronics, field recordings and slowly unfolding melodies shaped by her background in choral music and her studies of Hindustani singing. Intimate without feeling insular, ~~~ turned inward as a way of opening onto something larger. Critics responded accordingly, with the release appearing across numerous year-end lists and establishing Roxanne as a singular new presence in experimental music.
She expanded that vocabulary on 2020’s Because of a Flower, released by Kranky, exploring identity, spirituality and embodiment through ambient songwriting. Her latest album, Poem 1, goes somewhere more exposed. Written through heartbreak and grief, it moves at an unhurried pace through decelerated jazz, minimalism, vocal folk traditions and ambient music. Smoky piano themes, synthesizer drift and vulnerable vocals give loss room to remain unresolved, gradually revealing glimmers of renewal.
Since ~~~, Roxanne’s practice has continued to widen. She has performed at Glastonbury, Rewire, Dekmantel and Le Guess Who, composed for film and installation, reworked Beverly Glenn-Copeland’s “Old Melody,” and collaborated with DJ Python as Natural Wonder Beauty Concept.
Her music rarely raises its voice. It changes the temperature of the room instead.
Support: L. T. Fisk
Arlöv-based songwriter L. T. Fisk has spent some thirty years developing a universe of songs entirely his own. Here, song is less a fixed form than an urge, an absence, a disturbance — something that persists whether or not it is heard. At Inkonst, he appears in its most elemental configuration: voice and pump organ.
In Fisk’s own words:
“När vi nämner mörker menar vi brist på kärlek och det som är heligt är för alltid lågt och fult och smutsigt och i oss hälls en flytande kärna av ömhet. Och den sång som aldrig hörs, finns ändå, och denna sång som aldrig hörs, öppnar hela meningen till varför sången måste finnas. Ty endera dagen blir den mänska och det kreatur som aldrig hört denna sång, den perfekta följaren av sång.”

RIYL: Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Alice Coltrane, Sade, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cocteau Twins, Hindustani classical vocal traditions, Grouper, Julianna Barwick, DJ Python, Claire Rousay, Malibu, Nala Sinephro, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Lucrecia Dalt, Ulla, Space Afrika, Huerco S, Nico, Daniel Johnston Philemon Arthur and the Dung.
