About this Event

Waterloo in the nineteenth century was marked by pollution, infectious diseases, and slums. Our speaker Carol Harris will look at some of the pioneers of a new branch of medicine who transformed the health of the people of London, here and elsewhere. Along the way, we shall see how in public health, capturing hearts and minds is at least as important as presenting hard scientific evidence.

Carol Harris is a medical journalist, speaker and social historian. For the past 20 years, she has written and spoken on a range of historical themes particularly looking at aspects of the two world wars of the twentieth century . She is currently Social History Editor at Coram, the UK's oldest children's charity, and a volunteer at the Imperial War Museum.

The lecture will be preceded by a short AGM for the Waterloo Local History Society
