An Eye for Color: Learning from Josef Albers

In this 3-hour, in-person workshop, you'll learn about Josef Albers and his classic book, Interaction of Color. You'll be introduced to the principles of color that he learned at the Bauhaus, specifically how to identify colors based on hue, value, saturation, and temperature. And you'll learn how to perform two of Albers' most important color experiments: simultaneous contrast and the relativity of color, and color transparency and space illusion.

Richard Mehl is a designer, photographer, writer and educator based in New York City. He has an MFA from Yale School of Art, where he studied with design legend Paul Rand. Mehl is also the author of

Richard has been a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts since 2002, where he teaches first and second-year courses in the BFA Design program, including two-dimensional design & color theory, graphic design, and fundamentals of typography. He also teaches online courses and in-person workshops in SVA’s Continuing Education program.
