The fashion for all things Chinese – Chinoiserie – is a hallmark of grand 18th-century British domestic style. Beyond lacquer furniture and porcelain, most noble residences had one room decorated with Chinese hand painted wallpapers.
First appearing for sale in 17th-century London as part of the East India Company trade, these sumptuous papers portrayed exotic subjects in rich colourways. Birds and Chinese figures were stunningly depicted in detailed garden backdrops of sinuous trees, flowers and pagodas.
Learn about this luxurious, sophisticated decorating trend from V & A lecturers and Orientalist expert, Anne Haworth.
