An Evening with Thomas Mallon and Scott Simon
Acclaimed author THOMAS MALLON reads and discusses selections from his most recent book, The Very Heart of It: New York Diaries, 1983-1989 (Knopf), which offers a personal account of his literary and romantic life in New York during the early years of the AIDS epidemic. Mallon's 10 books of fiction include Fellow Travelers (which was adapted into a Peabody Award-winning miniseries (Showtime) and an opera), Watergate, Henry and Clara, and Dewey Defeats Truman). He's been called "arguably our best living historical novelist" (Christopher Buckley). He is also the author of eight books of nonfiction. He is the former literary editor of GQ and has has been a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, The Atlantic Monthly, The American Scholar, and other periodicals.
The program will be moderated by SCOTT SIMON, host of NPR's Weekend Edition and one of America's most admired writers and broadcast journalists. Simon has won virtually every major award in broadcasting, including the Peabody, the Emmy, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the Sidney Hillman Award. His books include Home and Away: Memoir of a Fan, and the New York Times Bestseller, Unforgettable: A Son, a Mother, and the Lessons of a Lifetimeand the novels Birds and Sunnyside Plaza. His latest book is Ulysses S. Cat and Other Animals I Have Known.
An onstage interview with Mr. Mallon and Mr. Simon and a question and answer period will follow. The evening will conclude with a reception. Guests are welcome to bring copies of their books for them to sign.
