RSE and The Friends of Greyfriars Kirkyard graveyard tour
About this Event

Step into the shadows of Greyfriars Kirkyard to walk the path of the man who redefined the age of the Earth. Join us for an exclusive RSE and Friends of Greyfriars Kirkyard historical tour tracing the life, burial and enduring legacy of James Hutton.

We will explore the resting places of the "Hutton Circle," including his close confidant and chemist Joseph Black, uncovering the web of friendships that fuelled the Scottish Enlightenment. With expert insights from a Greyfriars guide and a Fellow of the RSE, we’ll connect Hutton’s 18th-century breakthroughs to his vital role as a founding member of the RSE.

Experience the history beneath your feet and the ideas that changed the world.

The Friends of Greyfriars Kirkyard are a voluntary group who are passionate about celebrating this treasured Edinburgh space. Its mission is to help people understand, appreciate, and conserve the Kirkyard now and into the future.

Important points to note

  • This event is suitable for age 16+
  • Given the uneven terrain of Greyfriars Kirkyard, it may be difficult to ensure an accessible experience for all participants (e.g. those with buggies, those in wheelchairs, etc.). The guided walking tour will take approximately one hour; however, most of this time will be spent standing rather than walking. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. In the case of severe inclement weather, participants will be notified of any cancellations via email on the day of the tour. The tour will accept well-behaved dogs on a lead.
  • Please note this is an outdoor event. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and, in case of a light shower, an umbrella.
  • Please note that any personal data that is submitted to the RSE will be stored and processed in accordance with the RSE’s Privacy Policy. We will only use the mobile numbers provided to contact you in the event of a cancellation.
  • Livestreaming and photography may take place at this event. Please notify a member of the RSE Public Engagement team if you do not wish to be photographed. Recorded events will be made available on the RSE YouTube channel.
  • Covid-19: If you would like to wear a face mask, please feel comfortable doing so at our events. Please be mindful of other participants and stay at home if you have Covid symptoms or have tested positive for Covid-19.
  • If you would like to receive information from the RSE on forthcoming events and activities, including our Newsletter, please contact [email protected]
