he Pump House Art Center needs your help – to rise up to a challenge. Barn artist and author Robert Kroeger travels around Ohio, Indiana, and other states while doing fundraisers with his barn paintings, storytelling, and book signings. Wood County Historical Society, near Bowling Green, holds the record for attendance at one of his events – with 70 visitors, a full house. Since Ross County has a population of over 76,000, a mere fraction of one percent would easily set a new record for attendance for one of Kroeger’s events.
If you drive through the countryside, you’ll notice many tired old barns, some deteriorating and some collapsed. When they disappear, so do their stories, which Kroeger has captured in three books: Historic Barns of Ohio, Round Barns of America, and, most recently, Stone Barns of America. Though old barns don’t seem important today, in 19th-century Ohio they were essential parts of a predominantly agricultural society and helped mold Ohio as it transitioned into its industrial years.
The Pump House will host one of Kroeger’s events on Friday, November 7, beginning at 6PM, when he will tell stories from his book on stone barns. There is no admission, but donations are welcome. Kroeger’s books and paintings are for sale – with proceeds helping support the center. Please rise to this challenge and help us set a new attendance record.
