Ian Lamsdale (widely known by his nickname Lamsie), is the Managing Director and driving force behind Newport City Radio, a community radio station dedicated to celebrating everything local. Since rebranding from Urban Circle Radio in 2008, Ian has turned the station into one of Newport’s most dynamic creative platforms — giving residents a voice, promoting homegrown music, and shining a spotlight on the city’s culture and community spirit. It reflects Ian’s passion for real people, real music, real stories, and real connections.
Under Ian’s leadership, Newport City Radio has grown from an internet only station into our city's main DAB broadcaster. It’s a training ground and creative hub. From live shows and podcasts to city events and social media campaigns, Ian and his team focus on building confidence, community, and a sense of pride in Newport. His approach blends professionalism with fun — proving that community radio can be both local and high quality.
Ian is also a DJ and live event host, known for bringing energy and positivity to city wide events, dancefloors and festivals across South Wales. From a "light jockey" at Brooklyn Heights in 1993 through to his current DJ residency at Atlantica Bar and Club.
Since 2008, Ian has been an integral part of, and now chair of the Maindee Festival association, leading that team to deliver our city's foremost cultural event, Maindee Festival every July.
Ian has also taken in the public speaking world, including delivering a TEDx Talk about the power of podcasting.
At the heart of everything Ian does is his mission to promote a positive Newport. He’s a self-described “chief cheerleader for the city,” countering negative stereotypes and reminding people of the innovation, talent, and kindness that thrive here. Whether it’s through radio, podcasts, or live events, he continues to create opportunities for people to tell their stories, support one another, and celebrate the place they call home.
