An Evening with Judge Stuart Kyle Duncan

The Saint Thomas More Guild for the Diocese of Arlington is excited to host The Honorable Stuart Kyle Duncan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, for a question and answer session, with refreshments, from 7:00PM to 8:30PM on Thursday, April 24 at Christ Child Hall at the Basilica School of Saint Mary's (please note: the entrance for Christ Child Hall is off of Royal Street)

Judge Duncan was born in 1972 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He was nominated by President Donald J. Trump on January 8, 2018, confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 24, 2018, and received his commission on May 1, 2018.

He earned his B.A. from Louisiana State University in 1994, followed by a J.D. from the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1997. He later completed an LL.M. at Columbia Law School in 2004, where he also served as an associate-in-law.

After law school, he clerked for Judge John M. Duhé, Jr. on the Fifth Circuit. He then practiced in Houston before joining the Texas Office of the Solicitor General as an assistant solicitor general. His early career also included private practice in Austin and several years in academia as an assistant professor of law at the University of Mississippi School of Law.

From 2008 to 2012, he served as Appellate Chief for the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, overseeing significant appellate litigation for the state. He later became General Counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty in Washington, D.C., where he led the organization’s legal strategy on major constitutional and religious-liberty matters.

Before joining the federal bench, he practiced in Washington, D.C., focusing on appellate advocacy and constitutional issues. His broad experience across government, academia, public-interest litigation, and private practice informs his work on the Fifth Circuit today.
