About this Event

We are thrilled to host Joe Abercrombie who will be joining us to discuss The Devil – a brilliantly inventive and witty fantasy yarn, involving bloodthirsty elves, a congregation of monsters and a plot to place a thief on the throne of Troy.
This event will consist of 45 minutes of conversation between Joe Abercromibe and a to-be-announced interviewer followed by 15 minutes of audience questions and then a signing.
Joe Abercrombie was born in Lancaster, England, studied psychology at Manchester University, and worked as an editor of documentaries and live music before his first book, The Blade Itself, was published in 2006. Two further instalments of the First Law trilogy, Before They Are Hanged, and Last Argument of Kings, followed, along with three standalone books set in the same world: Best Served Cold, The Heroes and Red Country. He has also written the Shattered Sea trilogy for young adults, the Age of Madness trilogy for old adults, and Sharp Ends, a collection of short stories.

The Devils takes place in a magic-riddled medieval Europe under constant threat of Elf invasion. It follows a group of monsters, employed by a 10 year old Pope, to tackle those problems the righteous are not equipped for. They include a geriatric Vampire, an invisible Elf, a Knight cursed with immorality and many more wonderful characters. All on a mission to install a thief on the throne of Troy, and unite the sundered church against the coming apocalypse. It was a huge hit in hardback and very excitingly James Cameron has snapped up the film rights, so lots to discuss around the paperback release. The Devils is his biggest success to date and the start of a fantasy series, so the perfect entry point for new readers.
