James was born in Taunton and and brought up largely in Yeovil and Martock, Somerset. After working as a porter at Yeovil District Hospital he trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon and then spent the next 7 years of his career on stages all over the UK...
