A captivating evening with acclaimed author, James Geary, as he presents a tour through the world's wisest and wittiest sayings.
About this Event

The World in a Phrase: A Brief History of the Aphorism, Second Edition (2025, University of Chicago Press) explores the ancient art form of aphorisms, revealing how these compact, viral expressions, from the Buddha to contemporary meme-makers, offer timeless truths and serve as ultimate deep dives for lovers of words and seekers of wisdom in an age of information overload.

Known for his engaging and interactive style, Geary will deliver a dynamic talk incorporating elements of juggling and encouraging audience participation throughout.

The evening will conclude with a lively Q&A session facilitated by Mary Louise Schumacher

Geary is the author of four other books and was the former Europe editor of Time magazine. He is an adjunct lecturer in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, a lecturer in journalism at Brandeis University, and a lecturer in the English and Journalism departments at Boston University. From 2013 to 2023, he was the deputy curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard and editor of Nieman Reports.

Don't miss this opportunity to experience Geary's insightful and entertaining exploration of language and thought, and discover how a few well-chosen words can unlock profound truths.
