About The Book
Centered around the major celebrations of America’s milestone birthdays across 250 years of history, America, U.S.A.: How Race Shadows the Nation’s Anniversaries(Crown, on sale May 26), shows how we have become trapped in cycles of chaos, violence, and erasure over the country’s refusal to face its double consciousness around race and freedom—a cycle inaugurated by the founding itself and which has played out in grand and often terrifying fashion at all of America’s major anniversaries, which steer us back toward the mythology meant to disguise the truth.
Deliberately formulated and beautifully written, America, U.S.A. is a magnificently complex combination of lessons and voices—from W.E.B. DuBois and John Dos Passos to Herman Melville and Martin Luther King, Jr.—that, together, paint a sprawling and honest tableau of the United States, its complicated past, and ever more tenuous future.
America, U.S.A. is a live wire and a shining meditation on how we must reckon with a grim past in order to strive for the better angels of our future. On the eve of the nation’s 250th birthday, with chaos descending once again, I can’t think of a better guide through this moment and its impossibly high stakes than Eddie Glaude, a powerful voice of conscience in our tumultuous world. He pulls no punches, calling on us to interrogate our conceptions of innocence and freedom and the stories we tell ourselves about our past and present.
