About this Event
New Castle County Libraries is thrilled to bring the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read to our community. Award-winning author Diane Wilson will discuss her novel, The Seed Keeper, followed by a book signing.
Diane Wilson is enrolled on the Sicangu Oyate (Rosebud) reservation in South Dakota, and is a Mdewakanton descendant. She is a writer, educator, and bog steward who has published five award-winning books as well as essays in numerous publications.
The Seed Keeper tells the story of Rosalie Iron Wing. Orphaned young and living on the margins, Rosalie faces loss and isolation throughout her life. After the death of her husband, she retreats to her family’s abandoned cabin, reconnecting with her Dakota roots and the survival skills her father taught her. Spanning generations, the novel intertwines Rosalie's story with the 1862 Dakota War. The novel explores themes of resilience, cultural memory, environmental justice, and the enduring relationship between people and place.
The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. It is designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.
