Join us for a celebration of Kazim Ali's newest UK publication, The Voice of Sheila Chandra (the87press, 2024)! Kazim Ali and Carlos Mauricio Rojas will read from their recent works, and will be joined in conversation by Alycia Pirmohamed.
Kazim Ali was born in the south of London on the morning of April 6, 1971 at the same time Igor Stravinsky died in New York City. That afternoon, also in New York, Alice Coltrane recorded her album "Universal Consciousness." Kazim's many books include poetry, fiction, nonfiction and cross-genre texts. He translates from French, including two novels by Marguerite Duras. In 2005 he founded the small press Nightboat Books. For twenty years he taught yoga, but currently he is a professor of Comparative Literature and cultural studies at the University of California, San Diego.
carlos mauricio rojas is a queer, non-binary, colombian, welsh, british, poet, singer/songwriter, performer, gardener, food grower, pole and salsa dancing student. they like singing to plants, lemon balm tea, star trek, sluttiness, and practising magic. they have performed at the roundhouse, the albany theatre, the young vic theatre, the tate modern, chelsea physic garden, the star and shadow in newcastle, soup in manchester and the folkstone bookshop in folkstone. their work has been published by the 87 Press, montez press, writerz n scribez, and clav mag. carlos is an alumni of the poetry london mentoring scheme 2020, was short listed for the creative futures award 2022, and is a co-host for the fresh lip open mic night in south east london.
