An Evening of Indian Classical Piano & Santoor Sunday, August 2, 2026
About this Event
Experience Indian classical music like you've never heard it before.
An Evening of Indian Classical Piano & Santoor brings together two husband-and-wife artist duos for a rare double bill of Hindustani classical music — presented by Suranjali Canada, a Toronto non-profit promoting Indian classical music since 2018.
What to expect
Sonali Ray — Piano, with Anjan Ghosh — Tabla. Sonali performs classical ragas on the grand piano, a Western concert instrument almost never heard in Indian classical music. Trained in Hindustani vocal music under Late Pandit Chinmay Lahiri, Vidushi Dalia Rahut and Dr. Vinay Bhide, and in Western classical piano under Prof. Stanley Kruczynski, she has developed a rare artistry that bridges two great musical traditions. She is accompanied by Anjan Ghosh, trained in the Farukabad, Delhi and Lucknow tabla gharanas.
Kamaljeet Ahluwalia — Santoor, with Jas Ahluwalia — Tabla. Kamaljeet performs on the santoor, a rare and exquisite hammered dulcimer whose cascading tones carry audiences on an emotional and spiritual journey. She began training at age 7 under Sitar Maestro Dharambir Singh (MBE), and her most transformative learning came under the late Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, the legendary santoor maestro whose legacy she carries forward. She is accompanied by Jas Ahluwalia, a disciple of the world-renowned Ustad Tari Khan.
The evening
Doors open at 5:30 PM. The concert begins at 6:00 PM at the York Woods Library Theatre — an intimate, comfortable venue with excellent acoustics — with an intermission featuring refreshments. City Councillor Anthony Perruzza will be in attendance.
Whether you're a lifelong lover of Indian classical music or hearing ragas for the first time, this evening offers something truly special: melodies that span centuries, rhythms that speak across cultures, and two instruments — one Western, one ancient Indian — telling the same timeless stories.
