An Evening of Autumnal Folklore

As the nights draw in and autumn settles around us, come to The Reading Room for a cosy evening exploring the strange, fascinating and sometimes bizarre world of British folklore.

From black cats and bonfires to witches, omens, old wives' tales and the superstitions our ancestors took very seriously, we'll delve into some of the stories, beliefs and traditions that have been passed down through generations.

But this isn't just a talk...

Throughout the evening, you'll have the chance to test your folklore knowledge with our True or False folklore quiz. Do blackberries really become poisonous after Michaelmas? Is it unlucky to cut your nails on a Sunday? And could a horseshoe really protect your home?

You decide: fact or folklore?

Expect strange stories, surprising traditions, plenty of things you probably didn't know about British folklore, and a few opportunities to prove that you know your folklore.
