AN ERRATIC — Chrissy Nickerson
Opening December 8 at Elevation Gallery
In geology, an erratic is a boulder carried hundreds of kilometres by a retreating glacier, then left behind in a landscape it has nothing in common with. It doesn’t belong to the ground it sits on, and it can’t be ignored.
Canmore painter Chrissy Nickerson has made a career of being that rock.
Her newest body of work takes the glacial erratic as both subject and self-portrait: a painter set down in the contemporary art, standing apart from the polished and the polite. Her brushwork is aggressive and fearless, her colour unapologetic. It’s the kind of painting that refuses to blend in, and that’s exactly the point.
This series of large scale works, taken from her backcountry sketchbook of the Bugaboos, will remind you to look for the one that doesn’t belong!
