This very personal look at the Cold War is based on director Eva Gardos’ own experiences escaping Communist Hungary. During the communist repression, a family sacrifices its wealth and privilege to escape to the West. A chaotic late-night crossing causes them to leave their baby daughter, Suzanne, behind. They settle and build a new life in America, while Suzanne is raised by a loving peasant family in Hungary. Suzanne’s mother continues to fight to bring her home to America, and when she finally succeeds, Suzanne arrives in an unknown world with people she does not know but must accept as her parents while mourning the loss of her Hungarian “parents.” In time, Suzanne grows into a rebellious teenager, and only by returning to Hungary on her own terms is she able to find herself and her true home. American children of immigrant parents will probably find moments of recognition in this touching and compelling film.
