An Afternoon With Susan Petrone

Ms. Petrone will discuss The Musical Mozinskis, a novel that blends her real-life experiences growing up in a musical family with her gift in storytelling.

Struggling musicians Vincent Mozinski and Grace Klinefelter marry in the early 1960s, drawn together by the shared ability to see the music they play. The two pass this unique skill along to their ever-growing family of musical prodigies: Clara, Ellington, Bix, Allegro, Thelonious, and Viola. As their fame grows, the family’s continued success depends on their ability to keep churning out talented children. There's only one problem: Viola is tone deaf.

Mike Petrone, “Cleveland’s Piano Man,” will perform before and after his sister’s book interview with improvisation on the piano during her talk. Don’t miss this special program – you're in for a real treat.

Susan Petrone is the author of The Musical Mozinskis (2024), which was selected as Ohio’s Great Read from Great Places for 2026. Other novels include The Heebie-Jeebie Girl (2020), The Super Ladies (2018), Throw Like a Woman (2015), and A Body at Rest (2009).

Susan’s short fiction has been published by Glimmer Train, Muse, Conclave, The Cleveland Review, and Whiskey Island. Her story "The Silent Partner" was included as part of the Cleveland Noir anthology (2023).

Her story, “Monster Jones Wants to Creep You Out” (Conclave, 2010) was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her non-fiction has appeared in CoolCleveland, Belt magazine, and ESPN.com.

A recipient of an Individual Artist’s Grant from the Ohio Arts Council, Susan is one of the co-founders and former president of Literary Cleveland (litcleveland.org) and a current board member of Lake Erie Ink.
