As the Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival (ASFF) enters its second decade we are introducing a new recognition award to honor individuals who have left a lasting mark on Spanish cinema. This award is named after the renowned Dutch filmmaker Ramón Gieling and reflects the festival's mission to not only showcase Spanish cinema in the Netherlands but also bridge connections between the two countries and foster cultural exchange.
The first recipient of the Honorary Gieling Award is the acclaimed filmmaker Icíar Bollaín. Her extraordinary filmography along with her commitment to cinema that challenges and transforms makes her the ideal honoree for this inaugural edition. Ramón Gieling himself will present the award to Icíar Bollaín.
The evening will feature the premiere of Soy Nevenka (I Am Nevenka) followed by a Q&A with Icíar Bollaín. She will discuss her work and vision offering a unique opportunity to engage with one of Spain’s most celebrated filmmakers.
Program:
- 20:30 – Soy Nevenka (I Am Nevenka)
- 22:30 – Q&A with Icíar Bollaín
- 23:20 – Honorary Gieling Award Ceremony
Soy Nevenka tells the true story of Nevenka Fernández the first woman in Spain to accuse a politician of sexual harassment. Despite winning her case against Ponferrada’s mayor Nevenka faced harsh societal judgment and was forced to leave the country. The film highlights her bravery and the emotional violence she endured positioning her as a pioneer of Spain's #MeToo movement.
The Honorary Gieling Award named in tribute to Ramón Gieling is inspired by the Goya de Honor a prestigious recognition granted by the Spanish Academy of Cinema. This award represents the festival’s mission to connect both Dutch and Spanish cinema reinforcing ASFF’s role as a Spanish film festival in the Netherlands.
