Join us on Thursday 4th June, where Hamish Coney and Sarah Smuts-Kennedy unite to guide an engaging journey into a key figure of the New Zealand art scene, weaving together history, politics, and artistic expression.

McCahon’s work, exploring great artistic and New Zealand themes, has inspired generations of artists and writers. A feature of his practice was acknowledging his artistic ‘inspirers’ – and one of his most revealing works on this theme is the 1961 oil painting, 'Here I give thanks to Mondrian’ (collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tåmaki).

Artist Sarah Smuts-Kennedy explored McCahon’s legacy during her McCahon House residency in 2016 and is currently formulating a future ‘collaboration’ with McCahon and his 1958 16-panel masterpiece, 'The Wake'. She is taken with McCahon’s own collaborations, most notably with the writer and poet John Caselberg and their theories on the creative process – which she believes are relevant to creative practitioners today and into the future.

Over the last decade, Hamish Coney has conducted extensive research into McCahon’s practice and ‘A Question of Faith’ – culminating in his 2025 publication, 'A Potent Way of Talking: Colin McCahon and the Urewera Triptych' (Arotahi Gallery). He will share some of his discoveries in the creation of his book and why he views engagement with McCahon’s concepts can be inspirational for creative thinking across many fields of practice.
