Join us for a discussion of This Is What Inequality Looks Like by Teo You Yenn 《不平等的樣貌》作者: 張優遠
Through years of research and engagement with low-income communities in Singapore, Teo demonstrates that poverty is not the result of individual failure, but rather a consequence of how society is structured and the values it chooses to uphold. The book invites us to question and unlearn the myths many of us have internalized— myths that contribute to the normalization of poverty and inequality.
In many modern societies, human worth is often tied to productivity, educational achievement, income, property ownership, and career success. Those living in poverty are frequently portrayed as unsuccessful, dependent, or undeserving. Teo challenges this framework and reminds us that dignity is not something that must be earned through achievement. Human dignity exists before success, productivity, or status.
This thought-provoking book encourages us to reflect on inequality not as a problem of "others," but as a collective social issue that concerns us all.
