The Woodland Camera Forum will present a free presentation on photography of the American West on Monday evening, April 20th, at 7:00 pm. Location is the Living Hope Church, 240 N. West St., Woodland.
The photographer, Phillip Venable, will showcase his photos and stories about his travels throughout American West. He will focus, on Arizona, Yellowstone, and South Dakota, with a few images from Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.
Venable has been shooting photos since he was a kid, when his Dad gave him a Kodak Brownie. He studied black and white photography in college and had plans to be a photojournalist until life intervened. After spending an adulthood in Law Enforcement, he picked up his camera again and began making art.
Venable's preference is Nature/Landscape, but he is drawn to shapes, lines, and shadows found in the urban landscapes. His favorite subjects are old rusted cars, trains, abandoned buildings, and brightly colored doors. He uses several plugins to Photoshop to create surreal images from otherwise ordinary photos. He has used Nikon equipment since the 1970's and creates photos in both color and black and white, depending on subject matter and mood.
Venable is the President of the Napa Valley Photographic Society, and member of the Fairfield Suisun Valley Art Association, the Vacaville Art League, The Art League of Lincoln, Gold Rush Photo Club, and the Lightwriters Photography Club. he is also a member of the Professional Photographers of America and the Photographic Society of America.
His work has been shown at Viewpoint Gallery, Sacramento; Yountville Community Center, The Old Sugar Mill, Arata Fine Arts Gallery, and the Roseville Brewing Company, including shows at the Vacaville Art Gallery, the Napa Public Library, Solano Town Center Gallery, the Gallery at Village 360, Lincoln Art Gallery, and is a resident artist at The Little Art Shop in Benicia. He has won several awards at local shows and contests, including a Juror's Choice Award at the 2013 Vacaville Art Gallery Juried Art Show, and a People’s Choice Award at a member show in Fairfield. He has also presented photography programs at Rocklin Arts and the Napa Valley Photographic Society.
