DON'T MISS PREVIEW OF THE AMERICANREVOLUTION NOV. 5, DOBISKY CENTER
As America's 250th anniversary year approaches, noted historical and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns will present a six-part, 12-hour documentary on how it all began and you can experience not only a free preview of the series, but hear a local Native American historian at the same time on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Dobisky Visitors Center in Ogdensburg.
The American Revolution screening tour, a public preview of Burns' documentary series, "The American Revolution," is being offered nationwide by the American Battlefield Trust and Daughters of the American Revolution. It's currently touring libraries, historical societies, and museums.
You will see highlights from the multi-part documentary which took eight years to develop, and learn about the people and events of the Revolutionary War. Burns' series premiers Nov. 16 from 8-10 p.m. and airs for six consecutive nights through Nov. 21 on the primary PBS station serving Ogdensburg, WPBS-TV. It is not to be missed.
The series explores why and how the 13 British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion, won their independence, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. An expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America, the film follows dozens of figures from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Through their individual stories, viewers experience the war through the memories of the men and women who experienced it: the rank-and-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers), Patriot political and military leaders, British Army officers, American Loyalists, Native soldiers and civilians, enslaved and free African Americans, German soldiers in the British service, French and Spanish allies, and various civilians living in North America, Loyalist as well as Patriot, including many made refugees by the war.
The presentation at the Dobisky Center, 6:30-8 p.m., will also include one of the region's most noted Native American historians and speakers, Darren Bonaparte. He is a Mohawk historian, author, journalist and artist from Akwesasne. He is the creator of the Wampum Chronicles, a cultural history website at wampumchronicles.com and is a frequent lecturer at schools, universities, museums and festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada. He has served as historical advisor for numerous television series and documentaries.
