About this Event

Candidates in the BLS Instructor course must:

  • Possess a current base-level American Red Cross BLS certification or equivalent.
  • Successfully complete the online session prior to attending the in-person session of the instructor course.
  • Obtain and review all instructor and participant materials before entering the in-person session of the instructor course.

The BLS program is designed for responders and professional healthcare clinicians who directly care for patients in a variety of settings and who could be called on to care for a critically ill patient. It is recommended that BLS Instructors hold:

  • A professional license, certification, or role as a healthcare clinician, public safety professional responder, healthcare educator, public safety educator, or other qualified paramedical professional.
  • Responsibilities that include responding to or managing patient care and resuscitation and/or professionally teaching healthcare clinicians or public safety professional responders

Eligible professions include (but are not limited to): dentists, registered nurses, nurse assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physical therapists, physicians, physician assistants, lifeguards, paramedics, EMTs, AEMTs, EMRs, firefighters and law enforcement officers.

The Basic Life Support Instructor course is offered in a blended learning format that includes:

  • Basic Life Support Instructor course online session
  • Basic Life Support Instructor course in-person session

The online session includes two components: an introduction to the Red Cross and the Resuscitation Suite™ portfolio and program-specific details that cover key aspects of the course instructors will teach. The online session will:

  • Provide instructor candidates with essential knowledge about the Red Cross and the Basic Life Support program.
  • Introduce instructor candidates to teaching strategies and techniques used when teaching courses and lessons in the American Red Cross Basic Life Support program.
  • Help instructor candidates prepare for the in-person session.
  • Give instructor candidates an overview of the Red Cross Learning Center and the administrative procedures they will use when delivering American Red Cross training.

At the end of each component of the online session, instructor candidates will complete a final assessment to demonstrate knowledge of the course content. The required learning assignments for a new (first-time) instructor candidate can be completed in about 2 hours, 30 minutes.

Instructor candidates must complete both components of the online session before attending the in-person session of the Basic Life Support Instructor course.

During the Basic Life Support Instructor course in-person session, instructor candidates must actively participate in all lesson activities and demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Performing basic life support skills and other required skills.
  • Using course materials.
  • Conducting skill practices and practice and testing scenarios.
  • Evaluating participants’ progress.
