About this Event
The Philosophical Research Society is proud to welcome Matt Marble — artist, musician, author (Buddhist Bubblegum: Esoteric Buddhism in the Creative Process of Arthur Russell), podcast producer (Secret Sound), and director of The American Museum of Paramusicology — for a fascinating presentation on the esoteric roots of American Music: AMERICAN MUSE: FACES FROM THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF PARAMUSICOLOGY!
From Native American dream songs and cosmic symphonies to hip hop’s occult roots, the American Museum of Paramusicology (“brilliant and humbling,” The Paris Review) has chronicled a truly visionary history of American music. For centuries artists have integrated divination (astrology, numerology, tarot), altered states (trance, mediumship, psychedelics), magick, meditation, and other intuitive disciplines into their creative process. Always being remixed in America, metaphysical philosophy has remained a constant catalyst of artistic and technological innovation, as well as personal development and social liberation.
Drawing on years of archival research, artist and author Matt Marble offers a media-rich overview of this fascinating yet overlooked history. We’ll get to know the female pioneers of numerology and modern music therapy, the Luso-American innovator of cosmic jazz, the Native American “Ghost Dance” tradition, the African American spirit invocation music of Exuma, Merceditas Valdes, and Mother Leafy Anderson, as well as the occult influences of opera, country, hip hop, rock, and avant-garde composition.
