American Mahjong for Beginners - a series by Keep Mahjing On

Mahjong, a game that originated in China many centuries ago, is a game of both skill and luck. When it came to the West in the 1920s, it quickly gained popularity and is now played with four players seated around a table. Tiles are shuffled, dice are cast, and a series of rituals—including the exchange of tiles—begins. The first player to complete a winning hand of 14 tiles calls “Mahjong!” to end the game.

This 3-session course is designed for first-time players and focuses on building a strong foundation in American Mahjong. Each lesson builds on the last, so attendance at the first session is mandatory.

Lessons will take at Java Love Coffee Roasting Co. located at 244 Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair.

This class will be taught by a trained instructor from Keep Mahjing On LLC, a community-driven Mahjong company known for making the game approachable, engaging, and fun while honoring traditional gameplay.

All materials needed for class—including Mahjong tiles, racks, mats, and the 2026 NMJL card—will be provided for use during each session. Please note that these items are on loan for class use only and are not to be taken home.
